Lewis and Clark County
|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This pioneer cemetery is located in Lewis and Clark County, Township 11 North, Range 5 West, Section 1. From Helena, heading north, take the Lincoln Highway to the Silver City Bar, turn left, head southwest for approximately one half mile. The cemetery is on a small hill to the right and is visible from the paved road. Some references and maps call the cemetery the Sitzer Gulch Cemetery but it is known in the area as the Silver City Cemetery. The name was chosen in 1869 because a man named Silver lost his wife while they were traveling by horseback through this country and he buried her along a stream later named Silver Creek -- where gold was later discovered -- to commemorate her interment. There are many sunken unmarked graves.
