Cemetery notes and/or description:
Cemetery is 150 feet east of Lighthouse Road on the Open Ponds Trail, Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Two British sailors are buried here, one from the merchant vessel San Delfino, the other an unknown sailor from the HMS Bedfordshire. Both ships were torpedoed by German U-boats during World War II. Four other sailors from HMS Bedfordshire are buried at the British Cemetery on Ocracoke Island. Both cemeteries have been leased in perpetuity to the British government for as long as the British sailors are buried in them. The British Cemetery on Hatteras Island is maintained by the National Park Service, whereas the British Cemetery on Ocracoke Island is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard.
