|County Home Cemetery|
Also known as: Poor Farm Cemetery
|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
There is a burial plot on the property of the old county Home in Mt Pleasant Township. Unfortunatly there is no definitive list of burials there. A couple of years ago the plot was cleaned up and a marker erected by Ben james for a community service merit badge as reported in the Press Enterprise 11-26-01. There are an estimated 100 unmarked graves on the site. Thanks to the Bloomsburg teenagers efforts and the donation of a marble memorial by Catawissa Monument, a marker now stands on the site and reads " Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth." There are however no stones or individual inscriptions to show who or how many are buried there. This list comes from other sources mostly obituaries in the local newspaper and from the Columbia County Web site where more information can be obtained about the County Home in general. the Cemetery dates back to 1904 and was in use into the 1970's. According to James research, several people buried there were found in the Susquhanna River, others died at Danville State Hospital and one person was a migrant worker. The Columbia County Historical and Genealogical Society is endeavoring to add to their list of names ( from which list this memorial was created) and would appriciate hearing from those who have additional information. Please stop and place a flower at the site of a memorial to show these persons are not forgotten.
