REF: HISTORY OF DEARBORN AND OHIO COUNTIES

The ground for the New Hope Cemetery was donated by John Vanosdol for the sole purpose of servicing the burial needs of the New Hope Methodist Episcopal Church, organized in 1839. The first interment was made that very year being the remains of an infant son of John Kittle.
The congregation began with a membership of 12 persons, among whom were Nathan Vanosdol and wife, Elizabeth; John Vanosdol and wife, Nancy; F. Gibson, Daniel Kittle (who was the class leader) and Lydia Edwards. Worship was held in a schoolhouse in the neighborhood until 1854, when a frame church building was erected a little distance east of the cemetery. The ground on which the church was built was given by William Gibson.
