Located at the corner of Main Street and Scotland Road, the First Presbyterian Church of Orange, NJ, was established in 1719 by emigrants from Connecticut who had initially settled in Newark. Nathaniel Wheeler (1633-1726), a founder of both that city and this "Mountain Settlement" farther west, donated the land for the congregation's burial ground in 1723, and became one of the first to be interred here. The community continued to grow rapidly throughout the Colonial and Federal eras, necessitating an addition to the churchyard in 1792. The final resting place of many veterans of the American Revolutionary War, the northeast corner of the churchyard is dominated by a large bronze statue entitled "Dispatch Rider of the American Revolution" by noted US sculptor Frank Edwin Elwell (1858-1922).
