Author. Born at Castle Top Farm, Cromford, in Derbyshire, she studied at Bakewell Grammar School and Manchester University, where she received an Honours Degree in Physics. She was only the second woman to study science at that institution; which, in 1970, awarded her an honorary Doctorate of Literature. It was not until she had been left a widow that she began to write for publication. Over the next forty-five years, she produced over one hundred books, some for adults but mostly for children, featuring such well-loved characters as the 'Little Grey Rabbit', the 'Little Red Fox' and 'Sam Pig'. She went on writing into her tenth decade ("Age does not wither me", she declared) and, at the time of her death, was at work on the thirty-third 'Little Grey Rabbit' book.
