| Birth: | May 13, 1751 | | Death: | Jul. 28, 1812 | Noted American Revolutionary. James McCubbin Lingan was born in Maryland about 1752. At the beginning of the American Revolution he obtained a commission in the Continental Army. He fought at Long Island, York Island, and Fort Washington, where he was wounded, taken prisoner and confined in the British prison ship Jersey. After repatriation he returned to Maryland where he worked as port collector and journalist. During the War of 1812, a Baltimore newspaper, the Federal Republican and Commercial Gazette, produced antiwar editorials so inflammatory that a mob marched down to its offices, smashed the printing presses, broke all the windows, and pulled the entire building to the ground with grappling hooks, ropes, and axes. Weeks later, the Federal Republican's opinionated editor, Alexander Hanson, incited another mob. He and those who rallied to his defense were "beat enough to satisfy the devil," and tarred with boiling pitch. Although Hanson lived through the ordeal, his defender James McCubbin Lingan did not. He died of his injuries 28 July 1812. McCubbin's was originally buried in a private cemetery in Washington. His remains were moved to Section 1-89 A of Arlington National Cemetery on November 5, 1908. His wife, Janet Henderson Lingan (1765-1832) is buried with him. Rest in peace, Sir. Thank you for your service to America and for its independence. I am sorry for your death defending our Constitutional right of free speech (too ironic)! God bless you for standing up for the rights of all Americans. -
