Actor. Born in Tivoli Road, England, he was one of the most noted British stage and screen actors of the mid-20th Century. He made his London Theatre début in July 1926, toured with a stage troupe in England and Africa, through the 1920s and made his Broadway debut in 1934. He started his feature film career appearing in "The Ghoul" (1933), followed by memorable performances in "The Four Feathers" (1939), "Richard III" (1955), "Exodus" (1960), "Doctor Zhivago" (1965), "Battle of Britain" (1969) and "Dragon Slayer" (1981). He also was nominated for an Oscars for his work in "The Heiress" (1949) and "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Load of the Apes" (1984). He served as a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy during World War II and was the first of his generation of actors to receive the accolade of being Knighted in 1947.
