Benjamin was the second child of twelve born to Henry Haines and Marie Margaret Veach. He was a farmer in Adams County, Ohio. He married Catharine Wally (in Pennsylvania) and they had several children. Catharine died in 1896 and is buried in this cemetery also.

OBITUARY Notice: People's Defender; newspaper of Adams County, Ohio. Excerpt " April 17, 1913. Benjamin Hanes, 95 years old died at the home of his son William at White Oak. A native of Pennsylvania located in this county in his youth, besides William he is also survived by one other son, James of Clinton County and one daughter Mrs. Wheeler Freeman of Peebles. Burial Brush Creek Baptist Church."
