I've been working on my family history for more than 20 years. I retired after 40+ years in the medical field and now I'm teaching genealogy to beginners at the local community college as well as facilitating two genealogy discussion groups in 2 states. I'm a life member of the D.A.V. and the Society of Mayflower Descendants in which I served as NH State Co-Historian. I am also a member of the Molly Reid Chapter, NSDAR in Derry, NH and past V.P. of the Gilman E Sleeper Camp 60 AUXSUVCW in Salem, NH.
At the request of the Derry (NH) Heritage Commission, I am currently working on what is expected to be a 3 to 4 year project surveying and photographing the historic part of Forest Hill Cemetery in East Derry. I have also formed the Friends of Forest Hill Cemetery.
If you have any information about those interred in the old historic section, please contact me at Forest_Hill_Cemetery07 at yahoo dot com
I would like to thank all who have left flowers or notes on the memorial pages I've added. It means a lot to me.

 | Johnson/Parshley Dear D.J., I was wondering if George L. Johnson is the first husband of Luella S.T. Johnson Parshley. Is that why you have a picture of the Parshley stone on George L. Johnson's page? I'm doing research on Lavina N. Floyd Parshley and trying to figure out the connections. Thanks, Joni Spellman Krause | | | BarreNative

 | Margaret Pitkin Margaret PITKIN was born in 1892. She died on 4 Dec 1899. Margaret died of spinal meningitis. She was buried in Greenmount Cemetery, Montpelier, Vermont. There is a statue of Margaret in the Greenmount Cemetery in Montpelier which inspired Dan Lindner to write "Song for Margaret" in 1985 or so.
"Fresh fallen snow on the newly dug grave of the girl with the sunlight in her smile, Gathered around, all the many who loved her, whose lives she brightened for a while, All the laughter and love in her seven short years were much more than some folks ever see, Fare thee well, Margaret, you rest here in peace, while we cherish your sweet memory.
"A labor of love for the man from the old world who works all alone in the night, Lost in his thoughts as the chips fall away and the child seems to come back to life. Faithfully rendered by rough skillful hands, lovely features emerge from the stone. His tears gently fall on the face that he forms, for the old man has memories of his own.
"Silent she stands in her old fashioned dress, just a small figure frozen in time, Patient and calm as the world struggles on, for she's left all her cares far behind. And many who wander by her grave on the hill stop and leave her a penny or two, And each copper coin bears a wish and a prayer for the happiness that she once knew.
"Time flies away like the brown leaves of autumn, like cold ashes thrown to the wind. Sweet moments of joy are the glittering jewels that we hold 'til our memories grow dim."

 | RE: Thomas Morgan You are welcome. I didn't know there was a St. Joseph's cemetery in Syr. So I did some research:
St. Joseph's was established November 21, 1859. It was a small cemetery, (8 acres) located adjacent to Pond & First North Streets, owned by the Order Minor Conventuals (Franciscan Fathers). The estimates of people buried there ranged between 4000-6000+; mostly of German and Irish descent. In 1953 the cemetery was closed due to neglect and vandalism and abandoned by the Friars, as there was no endowment to take care of it in perpetuity. In the 1960's 6,567 remains were disinterred (of which only 509 were identified, according to the disinterment records kept between November 9, 1965 and October 29, 1966) and the land was sold to developers. All of the unidentified remains were placed in a common grave at Assumption Catholic Cemetery, Syracuse, where there is now a commemorative monument in Section U3. In addition to the white marble monument, there is a grey granite marker with legend inscribed…"Erected by the Conventional Franciscans in memory of those who were buried in St. Joseph's cemetery from 1859 – 1953 and whose remains were transferred to this cemetery 1965 – 1966" For reference material contact the Onondaga County Public Library. St. Joseph's Cemetery was one of the oldest cemeteries in the city of Syracuse, with many of the monuments dating before the Civil War.
