Major League Baseball Player. Nicknamed "Puddin' Head", he started his major league career with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1947 and became the team's starting third baseman. His most productive season came as a member of the 1950 Phillies "Whiz Kids" National League champion team, when he posted career highs with 25 home runs, 88 RBIs, 163 hits, and led the league with 157 games played. In 15 seasons, he played with the Phillies, Cleveland Indians, and Cincinnati Reds, and was selected to the 1950 and 1951 All-Star teams. He played in 1,691 games with 1,502 hits, 190 home runs, 812 RBIs and a career .258 batting average. After his retirement from baseball he settled in Cincinnati, where he died from cancer at the age of 58.
