Opera Singer. Born in Marseille, she was a renown soprano and mezzo-soprano, widely regarded as one of the finest from France since World War II. One of her first notable roles was in 1950, when she played Elsa in Wagner's "Lohengrin". In 1962, she gained worldwide acclaim with her performance as the Marschallin in the Richard Strauss opera, "Der Rosenkavalier" at the New York Metropolitan Opera. During the 1970s, Crespin became a highly respected vocal teacher.
