This cemetery was established in 1907 by the Right Reverend Phillip J. Carrigan, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sioux City. Two acres of land were purchased from local farmer Henry Jalas, blessed, platted and named under the direction of local priest, Father LeClair of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sutherland. It is said that it was the first Catholic Cemetery in the area, and burials came from far and wide. As other Catholic cemeteries appeared, there were disintements as families moved their loved ones closer to their homes. In 1947, a sixteen foot "art stone" crucifix was erected in the rear center of the cemetery. Shrubs and flowers were planted by individual parishioners.
An article in the local paper states that as of 1948, approximately seventy-five people were buried there. The first burial was that of Julius Rainville, a Civil War Soldier whose marker states he volunteered from Illinois. A widower, he lived in Lone Tree Township alone after the war and is thought to be of Canadian descent. His family is variously called Rainville, Renville, and Regnier and were quite prominent traders, trappers, and worked extensively with the Native American population of Minnesota. Julius is the only one of his family in this area where he farmed quietly.
