Carmichael Cemetery is located in Center Township, Greene County, Indiana, on land purchased by Alexander Carmichael from the U.S. Government in 1829. Alexander Carmichael (1791-1865) was the son of Scottish immigrants Archibald Carmichael, a Revolutionary War patriot, and his wife Elizabeth Nix of Surry County, North Carolina. Alexander and his family moved to Indiana prior to 1829 and became early settlers of Greene County. Alexander, his two wives Mary Ann Holder and Jane Petty, and at least eight of his twelve children are buried in this cemetery. Other family members buried here include Alexander's siblings who also traveled to Indiana: brothers Sterling and his wife Martha Long; Joseph and his wife Elizabeth Holder; sisters Elizabeth and her husband John Adam Fulk; Sarah and her two husbands Peter Graves and William Martindale, as well as many other Carmichael descendants. According to the By-Laws adopted May 31, 1993, family descendants only will be allowed for burial in the Carmichael Cemetery.
