Located on Eglin Air Force Base Reservation, this cemetery was designated as Cemetery # 13 on a 1993 survey conducted by Eglin in conjunction with Okaloosa and Walton County Historical Societies. It was misidentified as the Gidden Cemetery on this survey, thus creating confusion. The Gidden Cemetery is actually located about 2 miles east and is not on Eglin AFB property. Both cemeteries appear on older maps for Walton County.
A 1973 survey indicated at least 7 graves, with the only visible marker being that of Columbus (Columbia) Cosson. In 1998 a headstone was placed at the grave of William Cawthon by a great granddaughter. Until that time the Cawthon grave could only be identified by a wire fence and remnants of a grave hut.
The name "Hewas" originates from the layout of the letters on the Cosson marker. It reads:
IN
MEMORY
OF
COLUMBIA
COSSON HE WAS
ABOUT 35
YEARS OLD
"HE WAS" was misconstrued as the surname "Hewas" and thus the "Hewas Cemetery" came to be.
