The church was built in 1769 to replace an earlier church on the site. It was replaced in 1837 by St John's Church, Snods Edge, Shotley Bridge. In the 19th century the church suffered from subsidence due to mine workings, and it was remodelled in 1892.
St Andrew's was declared redundant on 29 October 1971, and was vested in the Trust on 13 April 1973.
Inside, it is a simple and appealing cruciform church, with sturdy stone ribs over the crossing.
As well as some fine 18th-century headstones in the churchyard, there is also the fantastic domed structure of the Hopper Mausoleum, erected in 1752, with obelisks above and statues in carved niches on the sides.
Although not signposted, the church and mausoleum are clearly visible from the A68 trunk road at Kiln Pit Hill. The churchyard is off the local Kiln Pit Hill – Whittonstall Road (¼ mile from the former and 1½ mile from the latter). Access is via a public footpath, which is boggy when wet, to the side of Greymare Hill Cottage Farm.
Sturdy footwear is recommended at all times.
