The village is sandwiched between the main A66 and A67 roads. Access to the village from the south (A66) is restricted to 6' 6" and also a weight limit is imposed on Whorlton Bridge. There is also a very sharp hairpin bend between the bridge and the village itself.
The Church, dedicated to Saint Mary, was rebuilt in 1853, and is an elegant stone building, in the Decorated style of Gothic architecture. It consists of a nave and chancel; the roof is of oak, open, and stained; the chancel floor is laid with encaustic tiles, by Minton; the seats are oak-stained and varnished, and will accommodate 150 persons. The entrance is by a southern porch, and at the south-west corner an octagonal turret, about fifty feet in height, forms a belfry. The pulpit and font are of stone, and are very neat. The total cost of erection amounted to £600, which was raised by public subscription.
