Elvington Cemetery #2
Also known as Cary Elvington Cemetery
Lake View, Dillon County, South Carolina, USA
This cemetery is known locally as the CARY ELVINGTON CEMETERY. It should also appear on the Search Results Page as "Elvington Cemetery, Also Known As Cary Elvington Cemetery" since we have at least five and possibly more Elvington family Cemeteries in the same neighborhood.
The two people with markers buried here - Cary Elvington and his wife, Millie - have been incorrectly placed in the nearby Rozier Cemetery, and repeated requests to have those removed have been met with no response.

This cemetery was surveyed and posted to Dillon County Genweb by Jo Church Dickerson in 2000.
There are only two marked graves in this old cemetery, one for Cary Elvington and the other for his wife, Millie Catherine Goodyear, one of the ten daughters of old John Goodyear and his purported wife, Senith/Cenith/Zenith Miller.
The cemetery is shown INCORRECTLY on topographical and other maps (and GNIS) as the "Rozier" cemetery but it is not! (The Rozier Family Cemetery is shown as Elvington!) This cemetery is just a little west of the town of Lake View. It is located near Lake View, just off Rogers Drive on the farm of Mrs. Rogers, between Highway #41 and Highway #9. It is in the edge of the woods beyond the house, past the tobacco barns, between the edge of an old road and the woods. The old road that once went past no longer exists. It is on private property and you MUST ask permission to visit.
The Cary Elvington Cemetery is located on lands that were granted to John Price in 1784 (South Carolina State Plats vol 7 page 40). Price conveyed the tract to William Price "son of John Price" in 1798; William Price to William S. Price in 1815, and William S. Price to Jesse Elvington in 1817 (Marion County S.C. Deed Book I pp 10-14).
Jesse Elvington was the father of Hugh Elvington and Hugh was the father of Cary Elvington who is buried here. This is the likely burial ground of Hugh and his family, and possibly of Hugh's father, old Jesse Elvington (though Jesse may be buried at the Elvington/Barfield Cemetery on Nobles Road, a little further up Bear Swamp).
This cemetery has often been conflated with the Rozier Cemetery on the nearby Rozier farm (now the Bryant farm). This is due to them being wrongly identified on the early USGS Topographical Maps of the mid-20th Century. These errors were picked up by GNIS and are now perpetuated on the Internet.
The error came about at least partially because the mapmakers must have noticed that the Elvington Cemetery is located beside Rozier Branch (which rises on the bounding Rozier farm). Why Rozier Cemetery is called Elvington Cemetery on those maps I have no idea. But the names on the topo maps - and in the GNIS database - are WRONG. The locations are just the opposite of that shown on maps and on GNIS.
The current "Rozier" Cemetery on Findagrave has a photo of the actual Rozier Cemetery on the page. It is understandable that Cary and Millie Elvington memorials have been posted there due to the misnaming on the maps and GNIS. However, this really is is the burial ground of the Rozier family, and there are no Elvingtons buried there.
