Add PhotosThe inaugural ceremony of Saint Stephen's Church took place on Saint Stephen's Day, 26 December 1805. Situated on the southeast corner of what are now Broome Street and Chrystie Street, Saint Stephen's was the fifth Episcopal parish in the Diocese of New York. Its primary burial ground was the churchyard which extended south of the church.
The original church was a wooden structure with a steeple. It was demolished in 1866. The site is now a part of Sara Delano Roosevelt Park, which cuts off Broome Street along the north end of the former churchyard.
The Saint Stephen's congregation eventually merged with the Church of the Advent on West 46th Street. They are presently known as Christ & St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, located at 120 West 69th Street in Manhattan.

▫ Years of use: 1806 — 1865.
▫ Cemetery disposition: Destroyed.
════════════════════════════════════════════════
The cemetery was primarily in use from 1806 to 1851, with occasional burials thereafter until 1865, the latter in disregard of the 1851 city ordinance forbidding burials south of 86th Street.
The church sold the property in 1866 and most of the human remains from the site were reinterred at Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn (Section 14, Lots 263 through 268, consisting of approximately 2234 bodies, 2000 of which were unidentified and placed in a common trench in 1867).
The congregation also made use of a secondary shared nondenominational burial lot situated on a block further north of the churchyard, bounded by First and Second Streets and First and Second Avenues, immediately east of a larger Methodist Cemetery. Both cemeteries were in the center of the block and were accessed through The Savior's Church on First Street.
