Dedicated in 1847, St Mary's is the oldest extant church building in downtown Nashville and served as the city's Catholic Cathedral for almost seventy years. Richard Pius Miles, the first Catholic Bishop of Nashville, was primarily responsible for its construction. He died in 1860 and was buried beneath the cathedral. In 1974, the congregation moved Bishop Miles' cast iron casket to a small chapel in the church's northwest corner. St. Mary's celebrated its 165th anniversary in 2012.
