Kamptee is the name of both the Military Cantonment and the civilian town that grew up around the Cantonment.
Established as a military outpost by Britain's East India Company in about 1821, the Cantonment sits just northeast of Nagpur on the bank of the Kanhan River. Originally called 'Camp T' as a description of its shape, the name stuck.
Kamptee Cantonment is still operational, currently housing the Officers Training Academy for the National Cadets Corps of the Indian Army.
While occupied by the British, Kamptee was part of the Madras Presidency, Nagpur (later Central) Province. Nagpur was the capital city of the Central (later Maharashtra) Province until 1956, when Bombay (now Mumbai) was reassigned to Maharashtra and eclipsed it as the capital.
Ecclesiastical care was provided for the British soldiers at the Cantonment by an Anglican church which served as the Parish Church for the garrison. A Roman Catholic church also existed, and had its own cemetery.
Current images of both churches as well as the cemetery can be found at the Kamptee Cantonment website: www.cbkamptee.org/gallery.html
