There are indications that the church belongs to the 16th or 17th centuries. Some members of the Dillon family, formerly Earls of Roscommon, are buried within its walls. It is believed that the cemetery occupies the site of the first church erected at the time of St. Patrick and on which he bestowed the relics making the church a Basilica. No inscribed stone relating the ruin exists.
