Pleasant Ridge Lutheran
Provost, Wainwright Census Division, Alberta, Canada
The church, first known as Pleasant Ridge Lutheran when it was built in 1917, was renamed Eye Hill Lutheran in 1918 and still later registeded as Pleasant View. It stood as a landmark in the area until August 1994, when it was struck by lightning and burned to the ground.
In 1910 an organizational meeting to establish a church and congregation was hosted in the home of George Halsten. From the beginning the community, mainly of Norwegian extraction, was very active in the church, boasting 108 members an an active Ladies Aid. The Reverend P. P. Hauglum conducted the first services in Norwegian and English. Summer services, church suppers and sales of handicrafts were common practice. Services continued until the depression years when drought and hard times forced many of the residents to leave the area in search of new opportunities.
The cemetery was located to the east of the church site. Records indicate that approximately 50 residents have been buried there, the first being Marie Scramstad in 1911.
Note: Two grave markers listed here are 4 miles north on the NE of NE 15-37-2W4, (Melvin Oscar Rudolph and Hans Olai Larsen Tosdal)
