Add PhotosThe William Shanyfield [Shanafelt/Shanefelt/Shenefelt/Shoenfelt] family maintained their own private burying ground on a ridge at Rock Hall across the ravine and about 50 yards south of the wagon road. (Ohio Records & Pioneer Families, Contributed by Mrs. C. C. Walthenbaugh of Canton, Ohio, now deceased. Vol. 11, p.48-50. Dr. Hale T. Shenefield, The Shenefield Family History, p.14-15) The portion of Rock Hall bequeathed to William's son Henry, deceased, and Susanna, widow of Henry, contained burial grounds. When Susanna, widow of Henry, sold her portion of Rock Hall in 1833, she excepted the family burying ground and the Antietam Lutheran Church Cemetery from the sale. "ROCK HALL" is located on the west bank of the Antietam Creek about one-half mile south of Old Forge Road and approximately two miles east of Hagerstown. Just north of the house and paralleling the creek is a segment of an old wagon road still in use as a private drive. The road is mentioned in early deeds and appears to have extended for some distance along the Antietam possibly linking the numerous grist mills. A short distance east of the house on a rise of ground is the site of an early Lutheran Church where services were held until 1787 when the congregation moved to the location of Beard's Lutheran Church. Maryland Trust for Historic Preservation, the National Register of Historic Places.
