Add PhotosThe York Blackfriars monks (of the Dominican order, also know as the Friar Preachers) were initially housed at Goodramgate when they arrived in York. The new site was founded 10 April 1227, at the Chapel of St Mary Magdalene in the South-West corner of York, and land granted at the instance of the King Henry III. In 1456, or perhaps earlier, a disastrous fire had destroyed the cloister, buildings, books, chalices, vestmenst, goods, deposited jewels, and 34 cells and studies. The prior, John Pickering, was executed at Tyburn in 1537, for taking part in the Pilgrimage of Grace. The friary was surrendered in 1538.
D.M. Palliser in his book, Medieval York: 600-1540, adapted the map of York c. 1300, from the British Historic Towns Atlas, Vol. V, which shows the location of the Dominican Friary (Blackfriars) on the west side of the River Ouse, between the city wall and Toftgreen.
The precise boundaries of the friary are unknown as the area has been built over several times since the Dissolution. The map coordinates are approximate.
