Landscaping architect Hetzel created this Lutheran cemetery in the years 1895/96. In 1902/03 a large chapel was added, which is still used for services. It was severely damaged during World War II, but rebuilt in 1952/53. The entire cemetery is now under protection according to the German Landmark Act (Denkmalschutz).
The Luisengemeinde (Congregation of the Luise Church) had split in 1896, and had given parts of its cemetery area to the newly created congregation, but still runs its own cemetery to the South, called Luisenfriedhof III.
The Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnisfriedhof was originally intended for the "Nouveaux Riches": wealthy inhabitants of this Western district of Berlin with its merchant families, the actors, and factory owners, members of parliament, as well as professors and museum directors, and so on. Some of the elaborate gravesite architecture still shows their riches.
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (20-30 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 30 years.
War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever.
