Biri cemetery is one of the 65 cemeteries in Norway where there are war graves from the 1st or 2nd world war. There are 988 soldiers from the Commonwealth countries who died during World War II in Norway; they are, as a rule, buried near the place where they fell, and thus there is no own British war cemetery. There are also 167 British soldiers from World War I buried in Norway, there were victims who were washed ashore on the Norwegian coast.
Here at Biri cemetery, 5 British soldiers and 1 Norwegian soldier are buried; There is a memorial ceremony at these war graves every 17. May - Norway's national day. The five soldiers were killed at Biri on 22 April 1940 by German forces; the soldiers were aboard a truck that was to transport them south. Everyone belonged to The Sherwood Forester's 8th Company (Notts and Derby Regiment). In addition, their driver, the Norwegian soldier, Johannes Ellefsen, was killed.
