Picacho Cemetery is located within the borders of the Picacho State Recreation Area along the Colorado River. Access from Winterhaven is along a 24-mile stretch of the Picacho Road, which is paved only for the first six miles. The next 18 miles is unpaved gravel usually passable for vehicles if not flooded by summer showers.
Similar to Potholes Cemetery, the original cemetery was moved to its present location during construction of the All American Canal. In 1935, O.C. Johnson, Yuma mortician, submitted the only bid for removal of the 148 graves from Potholes. In 1936, O.C.Johnson was again the only bidder for Picacho which lies 22 miles north of Yuma on the California side of the Colorado and along the right-of-way of the canal. The contract called for removal of 72 bodies from Picacho Cemetery to its new location. 12 bodies from the Castle Dome Landing cemetery were also to be moved.
The original site for Picacho Cemetery was east of its present location along the Colorado River, near the Picacho town jail and served the small mining community of Picacho.
