Add PhotosSt. John the Evangelist Church is located in the town of Over, Winsford, Cheshire, England. It is an active Anglican Church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and deanery of Middlewich. It opened in 1863, and is a designated Grade ll listed building on the National Heritage List for England.
In 1860 Hugh Cholmondeley, 2nd Baron Delamere commissioned the Chester Architect John Douglas to build a church in the centre of Over (which was at that time a village separate from Winsford). It was built as a memorial to Cholmondeley's wife Sara.
It is built of Runcorn sandstone, with a gray slate roof. In the third stage of the tower are two-light bell openings and clock faces on three sides. There is no clock face on the south side, because when the church was built there were only empty fields on that side. The spire is 140 feet (43 m) high and has lucarnes with a wrought iron cross at the top.
A chimney stack rises from the gable of the vestry. Internally there is stone panelling in the Chancel, with an alabaster model of the Last Supper.
Among the many memorials in the churchyard, there is one dedicated to those who died in a cotton mill fire in Over, in 1874.
