The first parcel of land was given by Dr. F. L. O'Kelly on February 15, 1882. On November 5, 1902, his wife, Mrs. Sara D. O'Kelly, sold the congregation 2 additional acres for $24 to build a church building. Construction began on December 18, 1902. Mr. P. C. Upshaw gave "the colored church" right of way to a certain spring in the back to supply water (document signed at the Gwinnett County Courthouse on April 27, 1903). The church took the name O'Kelly Chapel Colored Church. In the mid-1900s, the name was changed to O'Kelly Chapel Baptist Church.
During the 1960s, on land donated by Mrs. Mary Brooks (present site; across the street from the old church), a new church building was constructed. It was dedicated in March 1969. The old building was torn down, and that land has since been used exclusively as the cemetery.
The original O'Kelly Chapel Colored Church was the only church in this rural area for African Americans. It was a pioneer church, and many of its members were slaves. Its cemetery is filled with numerous slave graves that are marked with a simple stone. The Gwinnett County Historical Society lists O'Kelly Chapel Cemetery among the historical cemeteries of Gwinnett County.
