The cemetery was originated in 1832 when a plot of ground was deeded from the Fry family to the United Brethren in Christ for the purpose of erecting a church building and for using the adjoining land as a cemetery. This peaceful setting became the final resting spot for many of the earlier settlers in the community and continues to be used for burials today.
Some of the earlier graves include the maternal grandparents and great grandparents of the Wright Brothers. A total of 35 veterans are buried there, including those who served in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, Civil War, World War I, World War II and the Korean Conflict. Each year on Whit Sunday, the church holds a second service to recognize these fallen heroes and to celebrate the creation of the church and the cemetery.
The cemetery is located in Fairfield Township (NE quadrant of the SE quadrant of the NE quadrant of Section 26 Township 10N Range 2W) on the west side of Franklin Church Road about 0.3 miles south of its intersection with Fairfield Causeway Road.
Indiana Cemetery Locations, Volume 4, published by the Indiana Genealogical Society (April 2009), gives the primary cemetery name as Franklin Cemetery.
The cemetery is listed in the Cemetery and Burial Grounds Registry of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and in the State Historical Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) with Cemetery Record Number CR-24-51 (Old Franklin).
The Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory (IHSSI) survey number for Old Franklin United Brethren Church Cemetery is 047-199-05007 with the dataset compiled in 2009.
