Emily was the third child of George D. Whitney and Ella Relief Taft of Mound Prairie Twp. On 21 March 1898 she married first husband Markus Benjamin Burfield in Houston County, MN. Together they had three children: Dudley Whitney, Iva Isabelle and Abbie V. Markus died in 1916 and a year later, on 10 October 1917, she married Walter Emmit McGuire. He was a young soldier of 22 and she was 38. Walter fought in WWI and was discharged in 1919. He returned to Minnesota and they were still together in 1920. They divorced some time later as she was Pearl Rathbun by 1930. It is not known which Rathbun she wed, but she was also divorced from him by 1930.

Her death certificate shows Spouse's Name as Joe Rathbun even though it also shows her status and Divorced.
