He was the son of James Calvin and Betsey (Perkins) Scudder (married 20 Apr 1843). He married Nancy Melissa Smith on 1 Apr 1868 at Pinceton, Bureau Co., Illinois. They were the parents of Franklin Albert Scudder, Melvin Grant Scudder, Ada Mae (Scudder) Wilson, Blanche (Scudder) Osborn, Charles Albert Scudder, and Vera (Scudder) Schroeder.

A. Scudder, one of the pioneers of Merrick county, died at his home in Central City, Saturday, full of years and honors. He was an old soldier and a thoroughly good citizen, which fact was attested by one of the largest funerals ever held in the county. The services were held at the Methodist church in Central City, Sunday, at 2:30 p.m. - Clarks Enterprise.
