James Flournoy Yancey, 81, of 1034 Cluster Springs Road, South Boston, died Monday, Feb.28, 2011 at his home.

Born March 28, 1929 in Halifax County, he was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church and was a lifetime member of the Cluster Springs Volunteer Fire Department and the Cluster Springs Ruritan Club.

He was a heavy equipment operator with the Cluster Springs Division of the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Mr. Yancey is survived by a daughter, Tammie Yancey Conner and husband Jimmy of Scottsburg and a son, Larry Yancey and wife Brenda of South Boston; two granddaughters, Lydia Yancey Vernon and husband Scott and Laci Conner Compton and husband, Rickie; a grandson, Kenneth Wayne Conner, and three great-grandsons, Drake Wes Clardy, Dawson E. Compton and Seth Vernon.

Also surviving are two sisters, Forine Roark and Shirley Puryear, both of South Boston.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Irene Lowery Yancey and his parents, Charlie Pete Yancey and Susie Conner Chaney, and four sons, Donald, Teddy, Dwight and Mitch Yancey.

A funeral for Mr. Yancey was conducted on Wednesday, March 2 at Black Walnut Baptist Church with the Rev. Raymond Wooten and the Rev. Larry Davis officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
