Son of Nathan and Lucinda Yancey Richardson from Sullivan County, Tennessee. Yancy was husband of Nancy Malissa Templeton Richardson (buried in Waxahachie, Texas). She was the daughter of John D. Templeton. Nancy and Yancy were parents of two daughters: Mattie and Lummie. Mattie married John Ward Bardwell. Lummie married Duke D. Brown.

See Chapter XVIII, page 363 of War of the Rebellion. Yancy was "severely if not mortally wounded" in a skirmish with a Union foraging party on April 8, 1862. His daughter Mattie was barely two years old. His wife Nancy Malissa was pregnant with a second child. A second daughter was born on June 22, 1862 and was given her father's name: Yancy Columbus Richardson – she was called "Lummie".

The father, called "Columbus" by the family, died on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1862.
